Softball Drops Super Regional Opener, 2-1

ALLENDALE, Mich. – In a battle of top-15 opponents, the No. 13 UIndy softball team (49-16) dropped a tight 2-1 decision to seven-ranked Grand Valley State (48-8) Thursday afternoon at the NCAA DII Midwest Super Regional. The Greyhounds fell down 0-1 in the best-of-three-series, with the remaining two contests scheduled for Friday starting at noon ET.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After first pitch was moved up two hours in an attempt to get ahead of an approaching storm front, the teams endured nearly as long of a delay as the rains came earlier than expected.

When the action finally got started, the Hounds were forced to deal with GLIAC Pitcher of the Year and NFCA DII Player of the Year finalist Allison Lipovsky (30-2), who managed to keep the UIndy bats off-balance most of the afternoon. The Laker ace carried a perfect game into the fourth and struck out the side in four innings on the way to 18 Ks on the day.

UIndy's lone run came late when slugger Gianni Iannantone took Lipovsky deep for a solo home run in the seventh. Cathy Skaggs followed by drawing a walk to put the tying run on base, but Lipovsky struck out the last two batters to seal the win for GV.

Sophomore Halie Waters (23-10) tossed a complete game for the Hounds, striking out four and walking three in six innings of work. She battled through a pair of early defensive errors to surrender a run in both the first and second innings before hanging zeros on the board in her final four frames.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- UIndy managed just three hits: Iannantone's homer and singles from Hanna Burris and Haylie Foster.
- Burris was the only Greyhound that did not strikeout on the day.
- The Lakers upped their winning streak to 14 games and are 18-1 at home on the season.
- Iannantone now ranks third in the UIndy single-season annals in both hits (75) and RBIs (59).
