ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.- UIndy men's tennis will open its 2019 #D2Tennis tournament with a chance for revenge, as the 10-seed Greyhounds will face off with seven-seed Midwestern State- a team that handed UIndy one of its five losses earlier this season.
The Greyhounds (17-5) fell to the Mustangs (19-5) 4-1 way back on March 15, as a part of UIndy's Spring Break trip to San Antonio. The doubles point was hard-fought in the first meeting between the two squads, with MSU taking the one-doubles match 6-3, and UIndy taking the three doubles matchup 6-2. The two doubles match came down to a tiebreaker, with Midwestern State ultimately winning 7-6 (3).
Nils Hoffacker notched the lone Greyhound point in the match at two singles, with a 6-2, 6-3 win, but the Mustangs took wins at #1, #4 and #5 singles to clinch the win.
Since the loss to MSU, UIndy is 10-2 with only one of those losses coming to a D2 opponent in Cameron March 16. Eight of those 10 wins have come via shutout, with the Greyhounds surrendering just 6 match points since March 16. Coming into Tuesday's match, Midwestern State is ranked #20 in the ITA NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Poll, with UIndy coming in at #19.
The trip to the Sweet 16 is the fourth in program history for the Greyhounds, who had a breakthrough year at the NCAA event last season. UIndy, who prior to last season had not advanced past the Round of 16, made a run all the way to the National Semifinals, before falling 5-3 to eventual National Runner-up #1 Barry.
UIndy versus Midwestern State is slated for a 4 p.m. start from Sanlando Park. The complete breakdown of Tuesday's matches, and how the rest of the week will unfold, is below.
