ST. LOUIS – The third-seeded UIndy softball team (46-14) overcame four defensive errors and a six-run deficit Thursday afternoon at the 2019 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional, downing No. 6-seed Truman State University, 10-9. The Greyhounds got some clutch pitching late and some timely hitting down stretch, including a game-tying home run from junior
Cathy Skaggs.
The Greyhounds move on to the winners' bracket to face seventh-seeded Illinois Springfield tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET. UIS shut out No. 2-seed and host Missouri-St. Louis by a 8-0 final.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hounds fell behind by scores of 3-0 and 9-3 before coming all the way back for the victory. A three-run third inning halved the Truman lead to 9-6 before a
Gianni Iannantone solo shot in the fourth pulled the Hounds to within two.
Â
Brooke Montgomery led off the fifth with a walk, setting the stage for Skaggs. The Kokomo, Ind., native, who has made just two starts since Spring Break, came off the bench in the top of the third. She fell behind 1-2 but battled back to a full count before delivering the biggest hit of her career: a game-tying, opposite-field bomb that knotted the game ay nine apiece.
Â
The 10th, final and game-winning tally came later in the fifth, when two Truman errors on a single play allowed
Haylie Foster to come around to score all the way from first base.
Â
Speaking of Foster, she was stellar in the circle, affording the Hounds the chance to come back. After the 'Dogs hung nine runs on UIndy's pair of all-conference hurlers, Foster (1-0) moved over from second base to pitch the final 4 1/3 innings. She allowed just one hit and zero walks to the 15 batters she faced, silencing the Truman offense and collecting her first win of the season.
