ST. LOUIS – The third-seeded UIndy softball team (46-15) ran into a suddenly-hot Illinois Springfield squad Friday afternoon at the NCAA DII Midwest Regional, falling to the No. 7 seed, 3-1. The final score sends the Greyhounds to an elimination game later this evening.

UIndy awaits the winner of the upcoming Missouri-St. Louis/Truman match-up. First pitch from the UMSL Softball Field is scheduled for approximately 6 p.m. ET.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Coming off an 8-0 shutout win versus second-seeded UMSL yesterday, UIS pitcher Jaycee Carter got the starting nod once again. Springfield's all-time leader in wins, Carter (16-15) continued to keep bats guessing, holding the Hounds scoreless for the first six innings.

Down to its final at bat, UIndy put together a promising start to the seventh.
Cathy Skaggs, one of
yesterday's heroes, led off the frame with a single to left. She was followed by an opposite-field double from
Shannon Schuetz, putting two runners in scoring position with nobody out.

A pair of pinch hitters followed, with
Rachel Vander Wagen coaxing a walk and
Brooke Riess driving in Skaggs with a sac fly. Two harmless pop-ups would follow, however, ending the UIndy threat and the game.

Junior
Lauren Honkomp (21-5) took the loss in the circle – just her fifth of the season – after allowing two runs and walking three in 3 1/3 innings.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Shortstop
Brooke Montgomery was the only Greyhound with multiple hits, recording a pair of singles.
-
Taylor Podschweit had a double and a sac bunt, while
Gianni Iannantone added a single and a walk.
- UIS junior Bree Derhake scored all three runs for the Stars.
- Today marked only the second time UIndy and UIS hooked up at the NCAA Regional. The Prairie Stars won the first meeting, 5-1, in 2012.
