INDIANAPOLIS- In action just across town at Butler, the UIndy men's tennis team opened its 2019-20 year by taking top billing in both the singles and doubles draws at the event.
Dario Huber opened the new season by taking the singles draw title, going 5-0 through the bracket as the event's two-seed. Huber downed five Division I opponents en route to the title, opening action with a 6-4, 6-3 win over IUPUI's Colton Morehart. He followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ball State's De Negri, and then took down bracket five-seed Micheal Dickenson of Butler 6-3, 6-1. Huber then took on three-seed Tom Brennan of Butler in the semifinal, winning 6-2, 6-4. The Greyhound junior then won the title match 6-0, 7-5 over six-seed Filip Tensing of Butler.
Renato Lima took third in the singles draw, going 3-1 as the bracket's top seed. Sophomore
Maximilian Witthaus went 1-2 at the event on the singles course, while Greyhound newcomer
Cristian Morales went 2-1 in his UIndy debut.
In doubles, the pairing of Lima and Huber went 3-0 as the two-seed, but the young duo of Witthaus and Morales also went 3-0 as an unseeded pair. Witthaus and Morales pulled off the 7-6 (6) upset of top-seeded Dickson and Huete of Butler in the bracket semifinal, setting up an all-Greyhound finale that went unplayed.
UIndy returns to action at the ITA Midwest Regional Sept. 28-30 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
