INDIANAPOLIS – "We had fun," said senior
Jordache Mavunga after the UIndy men's basketball team's (14-4, 6-4 GLVC) third straight win on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds downed the visiting Southwest Baptist Bearcats (14-4, 7-3 GLVC) at Nicoson Hall, 97-78, with four finishing in double figures.
Mavunga led all scorers with 18 points on six-of-10 shooting, including four of five from 3-point range, while junior
Trevor Lakes stayed hot with another 17-point effort with five triples.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was another quick start for UIndy on Saturday, but this time it started on the defensive end. The Greyhounds scored 15 points off turnovers, eventually forcing 13 while building a 47-27 lead by halftime.
Mavunga was the shining start in the opening 20 minutes, scoring 12 of his 18 in the first half. The senior was integral on the defensive end, as well, grabbing two of the team's eight steals. Lakes looked to add to his eight first-half points with a jumper before the buzzer, but it was
Jacob Polakovich with his eighth rebound and a put-back just before the horn.
Big man
Kendrick Tchoua gave the Greyhounds their largest lead of the afternoon at 25 with 11:18 left in the game with a bucket and the foul, before head coach
Stan Gouard made a line change with under seven minutes remaining. Fellow rookie
Frankie Davidson tallied eight points in six-plus minutes, while
Terr'e Moss finished with five points and a rebound in the 97-78 final.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Not to go unnoticed, senior
Marcus Latham scored 15 points in 21 minutes off the bench, marking his 14th game finishing with double digits.
-UIndy finished 14 of 26 from 3-point range, including nine of 13 in the second half
-In just 17 minutes of game time, Polakovich totaled 10 points and nine rebounds on a clean five-of-seven shooting. The sophomore has secured a 70.6 field-goal percentage thus far in 18 games.
-The team dished out 20 assists on 37 field goals, the second-most helpers in a single game this season. UIndy previously recorded 24 dimes against Cedarville and Spring Hill.
-The Greyhounds upped their field-goal percentage to 49.3 this season after drilling 37-of-71 attempts on Saturday.
