INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men's basketball was chosen to finish second in the newly-formed East Division by the Great Lakes Valley Conference coaches, the league announced Thursday. The preseason poll is determined by the league's 15 head coaches.
Â
"We are truly honored by the recognition," said head coach
Paul Corsaro. "But we understand that preseason rankings are often based on success from the previous season. We are a group of mostly newcomers and still have a lot to prove."
Â
Southern Indiana was unanimously selected to top the East, with McKendree receiving the remaining first-place vote. The Greyhounds collected 40 points from the coaches, with Illinois Springfield (38), McKendree (37) and Lewis (35) following tightly behind.
Â
In response to adjustments needed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the GLVC regular season will feature three divisions and a 22-game schedule, where every team plays every divisional opponent twice (home and away), four random non-divisional opponents twice (home and away), and every other non-divisional opponent once. The top eight teams with the most points derived from the GLVC point rating system at the end of the regular season will earn a berth to the GLVC Basketball Championship Tournament March 4-7 on campus sites.
Â
Missouri-St. Louis was picked to win the Central, with Truman (2) and Lindenwood (1) also receiving first-place votes. In the West, Drury gathered 11 votes at the top, as Rockhurst (3) and Southwest Baptist (1) laid claim to the remaining four.
Â
Said Corsaro: "We are excited to get started, but our entire team understands there is a lot of work to be done. We can't wait to compete!"
