INDIANAPOLIS – Cory Miller Jr. drove and clawed the UIndy men's basketball team (0-1, 0-1 GLVC) back late in the season-opener against William Jewell (1-0, 1-0 GLVC), but ultimately it was the Cardinals' Mason Alexander who drilled the game-winner with 12 seconds left to lift the visitors to their first-ever win inside Nicoson Hall.
Miller Jr. finished with 28 points, including 18 in the second half, in nearly 35 minutes on the floor.
Kendrick Tchoua logged his first-career double-double with 13 points and 11 boards, while redshirt-freshman
Jesse Bingham tallied six points and 11 rebounds in his Greyhound debut.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Miller Jr. gave the Hounds their final lead with 27 seconds remaining with a tough drive to the basketball for the bucket plus the foul. After knocking down the and-1 free throw, Alexander hit an open left-elbow jumper to set the Hounds up for the final shot. Making his first UIndy appearance since joining the team prior to the 2019-20 season,
Dee Montgomery had a look for the win before the ball rimmed out.
The Hounds forced their way to the charity stripe 28 times on Friday – compared to Jewell's four attempts – with a whopping 23 in the second half. Miller Jr. played a large role, sinking 12 of his 13 attempts.
Bingham lived on the boards in the first 20 minutes, pulling down eight of his 11 rebounds in the opening half.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- After shooting just 53.1 percent from the free throw line as a freshman, Tchoua sunk seven of eight from the charity stripe in the season-opener on Friday.
- Miller Jr.'s 28 points is a career-high for the senior, upping his 24-spot from last season against Southern Indiana.
- UIndy won the rebound battle, securing 42 missed jobs compared to Jewell's 33. Tchoua grabbed seven o-boards, matching the Cardinals' team effort on the offensive glass.
HOUND BYTES
Head coach Paul Corsaro on the game
"I thought our guys battled hard; I never question this group's effort, but we didn't play very smart tonight. And that's what it came down to. We made some timely turnovers down the stretch which cost us the game."
