Greyhounds Suffer Another Heartbreaker

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men's basketball team (0-2, 0-2 GLVC) had its chance to tie or take the lead in the waning moments for the second straight game to open the season, but came up short on Sunday, 66-64, as a driving layup from Cory Miller Jr. rimmed out at the buzzer.

The Greyhounds led for nearly 36 minutes in the loss, but a 9-2 Truman run down the stretch proved to be the difference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Jesse Bingham stretched the Greyhound lead to 64-60 with a layup at the 3:16 mark in the second half before the Bulldogs scored the final six points to seal the win. Truman knocked down eight of its final nine free throws, totaling 20 attempts from the charity stripe compared to UIndy's five.

The Greyhounds attacked early in the first half, leading by as many as 11 just over eight minutes into the contest after a jumper from Dravon Clayborn. The Bulldogs clawed back to a six-point deficit just before the break as Clayborn answered again to make it 38-30. Bingham swatted a pair of Truman attempts at the buzzer to keep the lead at eight.

It was a back-and-forth final 20 minutes, as the Bulldogs inched within two tallies a couple times before finally breaking through with 1:53 remaining after a 3-pointer from Elijah Hazekamp.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- As efficient as he was on offense shooting four of six from the field, Bingham was stout on the defensive end four blocks, four steals and four rebounds.
- Kendrick Tchoua led the team once again in the rebound column, securing five of his seven boards on the offensive glass.
- The Hounds drilled nine 3-pointers against the Bulldogs, finding more success from deep after a team effort of three for 18 on Friday evening. Dee Montgomery paced the team with three field goals from deep.
- UIndy won the battle in the paint, 30-26, and off the bench, 15-13. The Hounds also controlled play on the fast break, outscoring the Bulldogs, 13-5.

HOUND BYTES
Assistant coach Roosevelt Jones on improving for the next game…
"We need to get more ball movement and hit open shots. We're getting a lot of open looks. Defensively, we can't allow offensive rebounds. We didn't do a very good job of that today so we need to clean that up. As we keep going and we continue to gain trust in our teammates, the rest will take care of itself."

Jones on Mikail Simmons…
"He's tough. Our entire team, we have tough guys out here. We just have to come out and finish plays all the time.

MORE NOTES
Truman has now claimed each of the last two contests with UIndy, but the Greyhounds still hold the all-time series advantage, 8-3 … UIndy has begun the season 0-2 for the first time since the 2005-06 campaign … the Greyhounds finished with six blocks on the defensive end for the first time since Jan. 16, 2020, against Lindenwood.

UP NEXT
UIndy caps its home stretch with a battle versus Lewis on Thursday night. The Greyhounds and Flyers will tip at approximately 7:30 p.m. from Nicoson Hall.
