vs. Lewis Flyers
Tuesday, Dec. 15, 7:30 p.m. ET, Nicoson Hall
ON TAP
The UIndy men's basketball returns to the court on Tuesday evening for a 7:30 p.m. tip with Lewis University from Nicoson Hall.
The Hounds claimed both victories last season by double figures.
Due to the ongoing global pandemic, the GLVC - along with each conference in NCAA DII - modified its league slate this season. The GLVC instituted a league-only 22-game schedule for the 2020-21 campaign. Per conference rules, fans will not be permitted in the facility and are directed to GLVCSN.com/UIndy to follow along.
NEW TOP DOG
New head coach
Paul Corsaro officially took over the reigns of the program on April 23, more than two weeks after 12-year veteran bench leader Stan Gouard resigned to take over Southern Indiana. A 2012 UIndy graduate, Corsaro spent six seasons as an assistant under Gouard, which included four NCAA tournament appearances.
ABOUT LEWIS
Saddled by multiple postponments since opening weekend, the Lewis Flyers enter Tuesday's matchup with a 1-1 record this season. The Flyers were handed a 21-point loss by Truman before redeeming the weekend with a tight victory over Quincy on Nov. 29.
Green Bay transfer Trevian Bell leads Lewis in scoring through two games, averaging 14.5 ppg on 35.5 percent shooting. The senior has also grabbed 14 boards thus far, while claiming a pair of steals.
Overall, the Flyers have five players averaging at least 8.0 ppg, while Beau Frericks joins Bell with double digits in the scoring column at 12.5 ppg. Atakan Sahinkaya leads on the boards with 8.5 rpg.
Head coach Scott Trost is in his 15th season at Lewis, and has led the Flyers to five NCAA tournament berths.
HOUNDS VS. FLYERS
Lewis leads the all-time series, 47-36, with the teams splitting their last 16 contests dating back to the 2012-13 campaign.
LAST TIME OUT
The UIndy men's basketball team had its chance to tie or take the lead in the waning moments for the second straight game to open the season, but came up short against Truman, 66-64, as a driving layup from
Cory Miller Jr. rimmed out at the buzzer.
The Greyhounds led for nearly 36 minutes in the loss, but a 9-2 Truman run down the stretch proved to be the difference.
Jesse Bingham stretched the Greyhound lead to 64-60 with a layup at the 3:16 mark in the second half before the Bulldogs scored the final six points to seal the win. Truman knocked down eight of its final nine free throws, totaling 20 attempts from the charity stripe compared to UIndy's five.
The Greyhounds attacked early in the first half, leading by as many as 11 just over eight minutes into the contest after a jumper from
Dravon Clayborn. The Bulldogs clawed back to a six-point deficit just before the break as Clayborn answered again to make it 38-30. Bingham swatted a pair of Truman attempts at the buzzer to keep the lead at eight.
It was a back-and-forth final 20 minutes, as the Bulldogs inched within two tallies a couple times before finally breaking through with 1:53 remaining after a 3-pointer from Elijah Hazekamp.
PAINT THE TOWN CRIMSON
Three Greyhounds are averaging double figures in the early going, including
Cory Miller Jr.,
Dee Montgomery and
Kendrick Tchoua. Nearly 54 percent of the trio's points have come inside the paint, with another 26 percent registering at the charity stripe.
..AND IT FEELS SO GOOD
Teammate of
Jesse Bingham at Warren Central,
Jakobie Robinson transferred after earning GLVC All-Freshman team recognition just a season ago at McKendree. Bingham and Robinson led Warren Central to an Indiana state title in 2018.
INDY CONNECTIONS
Two of Corsaro's new assistants have ties to Indiana in
Mike Burris and
Roosevelt Jones. Burris, most recently the head coach for 15 seasons at Olney Central College, hails from Owensburg, Ind., nearly 75 miles from Indianapolis.
Jones graduated from Butler in 2016, where he finished his career as a Bulldog ranked 11th in program history with 1,533 points. Most recently Jones served as the Associate Head Coach at IU-Kokomo before joining the Greyhounds.
LIVING LEGACY
