Carpinelli Plates 5, Baseball Earns First Win

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – John Carpinelli and the UIndy baseball team (1-1) rebounded in the nightcap on Saturday evening to win its first game of the season over Hillsdale, 13-7.

The Greyhounds dropped the opener earlier in the afternoon, 6-1, to the Chargers.

GAME 1 | Chargers 6, Hounds 1
Junior Trey Smith homered to left field with two outs in the third inning to knot the game at one apiece after Hillsdale grabbed the early lead, but that would be the end of the UIndy offense in the opener.

The Chargers tacked on a single run in each of the middle innings before a Greyhound miscue and sacrifice fly made it 6-1.

The Greyhounds mustered nine hits in the loss, with a pair coming in the final frame. Justyn Eichbaum and Ty Williams each recorded two knocks, while Corey Bates struck out seven in five innings of work.

GAME 2 | Hounds 13, Chargers 7
The Greyhounds avenged the loss to the Chargers, grabbing an 8-1 advantage before winning 13-7.

Carpinelli drilled his first of two doubles in the fourth inning, driving home Smith to give UIndy the 4-1 lead. Moments later, Carpinelli and Hunter Waning traded places and the Greyhounds added to their lead.

Hillsdale responded in the fifth inning with four runs, but Carpinelli struck again in the seventh with a bases-clearing two-bagger to extend the UIndy edge to 11-5. The lefty bat recorded his fifth RBI of the game in the ninth on a fielder's choice bunt that allowed Will Smithey to score.

Reid Werner tossed five frames of two-run ball in his first start of 2020.
