INDIANAPOLIS – "Greyhounds. 5.3. They need to go the length of the court. We'll see what they do here. Inbound to King. King to take the last shot. King. Driving. Backboard.
Jimmy King!"
That was the call on the GLVC Sports Network as the Indianapolis native sent Greyhound fans home happy on Saturday evening, finding the rim at the buzzer to knock off GLVC-leading Truman, 83-82, and cap a successful Senior Day. King, who had gone scoreless for over 16 minutes before the game-winner, finished with 14 points and improved the UIndy men's basketball team to 19-5 overall and 11-5 in league play.
Â
Truman led the conference in the point-rating system (PRS) heading into Saturday, but now drops to 17-7 and 13-3 with the loss.
Â
The Greyhounds led by as much as a dozen in the second half, but the Bulldogs slowly shrunk the deficit down before Brodric Thomas drilled his own 3-pointer from the corner to give the visitors the lead with four minutes to go.
Â
Jordache Mavunga grabbed a huge offensive board with just over a minute left and kissed it off the glass to reclaim the advantage for the Hounds, but it was a pair of Truman free throws with 5.3 ticks remaining that set up the King winner at the buzzer. Onions.
Â
Fighting back tears, Head Coach Stan Gouard described what he set up during the timeout. "We wanted to get the ball in Jimmy's hands and get downhill. We put a shooter in the corner and it was on Jimmy to make a decision. He got to the basket and made a great decision. The rest is history."
Â
The senior hit a pair of jumpers early in the second half, but the Bulldog defense held King scoreless until the horn went off. He added four assists and three rebounds to his 14 tallies.
Â
"That was crazy, really fun to be a part of," King said after the game. "To get that win on Senior Night was special. I knew I was going to take the shot."
Â
UIndy used a 10-2 run to end the first half and lead 43-35 at the break, with
Marcus Latham hitting a pair of triples and scoring eight during the stretch. Mavunga finished with 10 points before halftime. The Greyhounds finished eight for 22 from 3-point range for the game.
Â
Not to go unnoticed, sophomore
Jacob Polakovich scored a team-high 17 points. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native went 7 of 9 from the floor and a perfect 3 for 3 from the charity stripe. Lakes, who chipped in three 3-pointers, was credited with four steals on the defensive end.
Â
Truman's Thomas, who entered Saturday second in the GLVC at 21.2 points per game, finished with 22. Hunter Strait drilled 4-of-5 3-point attempts to pace the Bulldog's deep attack, which combined to finish 10 of 20 from beyond the arc.
Â
As a team, UIndy shot 53.3 percent (32 for 60) from the floor and held the rebounding edge, 30-28.
Â
Gouard added, "Senior Night and
Jimmy King hits the game-winner. What more can I say? Unbelievable effort. Unbelievable play. Our guys were awesome tonight."
Â
The Greyhounds will hit the road next weekend, beginning with an away tilt in St. Louis versus Maryville Thursday. Tip off is set for at approximately 8:30 p.m. ET.
