YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. –
Lacrosse is a game of runs, and Sunday was chock-full of them in UIndy's exciting victory over No. 8 Florida Southern, held on the campus of Young Harris College. The 12th-ranked Greyhounds scored three unanswered goals to close out the game, with
Peyton Romig clinching it in double overtime in the 15-14 win.
It was perhaps the biggest win in program history for head coach
James Delaney and Co., as Florida Southern won the 2016 national championship and was the runner-up in each of 2017 and 2018.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Romig not only secured the initial draw, but the junior also claimed the ball to start the second session to set up the game winner. The Carthage, N.Y., native moved the ball into offensive territory before faking a pass to
Abigail Lagos and driving to the cage. Romig snuck it past Mocs' keeper Patricia Werker, who made nine saves on Sunday.
Â
Trailing 4-2 with under 10 minutes left in the first half,
Grace Gunneson capped a 5-0 spurt to give the Greyhounds a 7-4 advantage at the break. The Mocs used their own five-goal run to lead the rest of the way until just one second remained when
Emily Meyer found the back of the cage to send it to overtime.
UIndy scored six of the final seven goals, all with under eight minutes left in the second half. Freshmen
Sarah Klein,
Quinn Malcolm and
Christina Sato each recorded their first career goals in the win.
Â
