Inside-The-Park Homer Sends UIndy Past Notre Dame

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The UIndy baseball team had their home opener moved to Grand Park Friday when they took on the Notre Dame College Falcons. After falling behind early, the Greyhounds battled back, highlighted by a big eighth inning as they won 7-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 3-0 early, the UIndy bats came to life after a Bo Minor two-run shot cut the NDC lead down to just one. The Hounds would tie the game at three all in the fourth inning before taking the lead on a passed ball in the sixth. The Falcons kept fighting, taking the lead on a UIndy error in the eighth inning before Trey Smith sent a ball into deep left, getting past the glove of the outstretched leftfielder as Smith touched them all for an inside the park home run, scoring three to give UIndy the 7-5 lead heading into the final inning. Notre Dame would make it close, getting a runner on third with no outs but were not successful in bringing him home as the Hounds went on to win 7-6.

Corey Bates pitched six and a third innings for the Greyhounds. After the senior gave up a run early into his outing, he would only sacrifice three hits over the next handful of innings. Bates struck out eight batters while only walking one. The win went to Matt Rearick out of the bullpen for UIndy. The reliever pitched two and two-thirds innings for the Hounds, only giving up two hits out of his seven batters faced.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Trey Smith continues to swing a hot bat for UIndy. Smith was walked three times Friday afternoon, his only hit could not have come at a better time in the eighth inning when bringing in three on his homer. He now has six ribbies early on the year.
-Four starters are now hitting over .300 so far this season in Will Smithey, Ty Williams, Smith, and Justyn Eichbaum.
-In two games pitching so far, Corey Bates has held opposing batters to a .244 average and struck out 15 batters to lead the Greyhounds pitching staff.
