The UIndy men's basketball team wraps up the regular season this weekend with rematches against McKendree and Southern Indiana.
The Greyhounds fell to the Bearcats back on Jan. 11 two days after knocking off then-No. 20 Southern Indiana at Nicoson Hall.
ABOUT MCKENDREE
After suffering a mid-season skid, McKendree has won three straight games and will finish its first campaign with a .500 winning percentage or better since 2011-12. The Bearcats head into the weekend at 9-9 in GLVC play, and face arguably their toughest road trip of the season.
Logan Kohrmann leads the Bearcats with 19.9 ppg, while shooting 51.2 percent from the field. The Bartelso, Ill., native also ranks second on the team with 5.5 rpg and a 40.7 percent 3-point mark.
Oliver Stephen has been one of the most prolific 3-point shooters in the GLVC this season, ranking third in the league with 3.16 made per game. The junior has drilled 44.9 percent of his attempts and is averaging 11.8 ppg.
Head coach Chris Foster is in his second season in Lebanon after spending the previous four years at Truman State University.
ABOUT SOUTHERN INDIANA
If there is a hotter team in the GLVC than UIndy, it's the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles. Winners of their last seven, and 12 of 13, the Screaming Eagles' lone blemish during the stretch is at No. 18 Missouri-St. Louis on Jan. 30. USI returned the favor, however, a mere 15 days later with a one-point victory in Evansville.
USI returned to the NABC top 25 this week, polling at No. 24.
Emmanuel Little has been one of the more dominant players in the GLVC this season, averaging 16.0 ppg and 8.3 rpg as a junior. The Indianapolis native also leads one of four Screaming Eagles with 20+ steals with 29 to add to his 20 blocks. Mateo Rivera and Joe Laravie have combined for 129 assists, with the former shooting 45.7 percent from 3-point range.
Head coach Rodney Watson is in his 11th season at USI and recently won his 250th career game in Evansville.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hounds played stout defense in the first half at Missouri S&T, allowing just 27 points. Despite a lack of offensive consistency in the opening 20 minutes, the Hounds shot six of 14 from beyond the arc to build a 13-point advantage at the break.
With how good its defense was, the UIndy 3-point attack was even deadlier in the second half. Lakes led the effort from deep, as the team finished with 14 long balls, one off it's season-high best of 15 against Grand Valley State.
UIndy shot 51.2 percent from the floor as a team in the final 20 minutes, including a perfect 10-for-10 mark from the charity stripe. Mavunga broke his recent cold streak with four 3-pointers, totaling 14 points to add to his eight boards.
CROWNING THE KING
Senior
Jimmy King is on the verge of UIndy history, as he sits just 38 assists from matching Ron Rutland's program-best total of 547.
Albeit a lofty goal, King currently has 358 career rebounds inside a Greyhound uni, and would become the first-ever UIndy men's basketball player to end his tenure with 1,000+ points, 500+ assists and 400+ boards.
PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES
A well-balanced attack has been the key to success all season for the Greyhounds, who top the GLVC with 82.6 ppg. Three players, including UIndy leading scorer
Trevor Lakes, rank inside the top 30 among league members in individual scoring, while
Jimmy King sits atop the assist leaders with 6.4 helpers per game.
Sophomore big man
Jacob Polakovich still leads the conference with a 67.4 field-goal percentage, while the team as a whole is second at 49.1 percent.
Marcus Latham and Cory Miller currently sit sixth and eighth, respectively, from the charity stripe.
REGIONAL RENDEZVOUS
The NCAA releases three regional poll prior to the Selection Sunday, with the first set of rankings revealing UIndy in the top spot a week ago. Per advanced metrics (can be found to your right), UIndy projects to remain as top seed in Wednesday's second poll, as the Greyhounds lead all regional programs in most categories.
UIndy ranks second in overall region wins (19) behind none other than Southern Indiana, but is tied with Ashland in victories over nationally-ranked opponents (4). The last time UIndy hosted an NCAA tournament contest was 1997 when it topped the Great Lakes region.
