INDIANAPOLIS- UIndy Wrestling will send five to the 2020 NCAA Division II National Championships in Sioux Falls, capping a fourth place finish at the Super Region 3 Tournament Saturday.
Two Greyhounds will make the trip to the NCAA meet for the third time, with
Ana Abduljelil and
Brody Conner both punching their tickets at 125 and 184, respectively.
Dawson Combest,
Jack Eiteljorge, and
Gleason Mappes all earned their first trips to Nationals.
Abduljelil and Eiteljorge both finished their days as Regional Champions at 125 and 165, while Mappes finished second at 174 and Combest and Conner both took third.Â
At 125, #5 Abduljelil won his first regional behind a pair of wins on the day. The Greyhound senior, seeded atop the 125 field, took a 14-8 win over Ray Adams of Tiffin in the semifinals, and then defeated #10 Cole Laya of West Liberty 3-2 to take the regional title.
Eiteljorge, also the one seed at 165, opened his day with a pin in 2:50 over Jacob Lees of Urbana in the quarterfinals, and earned his spot in the final with a 9-4 win over Jordan Tague of Notre Dame. The redshirt freshman closed out his championship with his second win of the season over Tiffin's Bryan LaVearn, 4-2, in the title match.
Mappes earned his first trip to Nationals with a 2-1 day at 174. The sophomore Greyhound opened his day with an 8-2 win over John Penfold of Lake Erie, and then followed it up with a 5-0 decision over #10 Hayden Bronne of Tiffin in the semifinals. Mappes fell to #5 Brett Romanzak in the regional finale, 4-2.
Combest, currently the #9 ranked wrestler in the nation at 157, went 4-1 on the day in finishing third. The redshirt freshman opened his day with a 10-2 major decision over Blake Miller of West Liberty, and then took a 4-0 decision over Cam Jenkins from Ashland in the quarterfinals. After a semifinal loss, Combest bounced back with his seventh tech fall of the year, 15-0 in 4:53 for his second win of the day over Miller. Combest earned his first trip to nationals with a 5-2 win over Cole Houser of Urbana.Â
Three-time National Qualifier Conner took a 7-0 quarterfinal win over Lake Erie's Brylan Clouse, but fell to #6 Tony Vezzetti of Notre Dame in the semifinals. Conner posted two bonus point wins to close out his day, with a 10-0 major decision over Richie Screptock of Tiffin in the conso semis, and then earning his third trip to Nationals with a pin in 1:36 of Zane Lanham of West Liberty.
In addition to the five Greyhound national qualifiers, four other Hounds placed at the Regional, with
Matt McKinney (141),
Kyle Barkovich (149), and
Zach Fry (197) all finishing fourth and
Chase Wilkerson (133) taking fifth.Â
As a team, UIndy finished fourth with 115.5 total team points. Notre Dame won the team title with 127.5 points, with Tiffin (122) and Ashland (121.5) rounding out the top three teams.
The 2020 NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships will take place March 13-14 in Sioux Falls, S.D. at the PREMIERE Center. The top three finishers in each weight class in each of the six regions advance to the NCAA meet, with brackets for the National Championships released late next week.
