Baseball Sweeps Oakland City Series to Win 9 Straight

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy baseball team (9-1) kicked off the month of March in an excellent fashion, completing the series sweep after winning both doubleheader matches on Sunday. Their matches against in-region foe Oakland City ended in 6-1 and 10-4 final scores. Coby Taylor dished in four RBI's on the day as UIndy's designated hitter, while Myc Witty's start in game one was one to remember, throwing six innings and only allowing a single run.

The games were contested on a turf field at nearby Bishop Chatard High School due to less-than-ideal field conditions at Greyhound Park.

GAME 1 | UIndy 6, OCU 1
Overcoming a game-opening home run, Witty was able to persevere and pitch five scoreless innings for the Hounds, totaling six on the day. Witty's performance earned him his third win on the young season.

The Greyhounds came out the gates swinging, scoring two quick runs inside the first inning. UIndy maintained their lead from then-on for the rest of the game, never looking back. Isaac Bair had an excellent game behind the plate and swinging the bat, earning a team-leading total of three RBIs in two hits. Two of his three RBIs came off of a dinger to left-center, his second home run this year. Taylor drew in two runs as well in the same inning, dishing a double out to center field to bring home Hunter Waning and John Carpinelli.

GAME 2 | UIndy 10, OCU 4
After allowing three quick runs to the Mighty Oaks within the first inning of play, the Greyhounds trailed from behind up until the bottom of the fourth inning. Ryan Simons set up UIndy by advancing Ty Williams to third base off a sacrifice fly, and then UIndy capitalized on an Oakland City error to bring him in as the tying run off Alex Vela's dribbler to the mound.

The score wouldn't be tied at 4-4 for long, as Trey Smith landed another pitch out of the mark to up the score to 6-4, his team-leading fourth home run on the season. Taylor would join the home-run club with a home-run of his own, smacking a ball to left field in the eighth inning to drive in himself and Waning for a 10-4 lead.

Overall, UIndy had excellent eyes on the ball throughout the second game, only allowing one strikeout against opposing Mighty Oak pitchers.

UP NEXT
UIndy will next face off against Truman State on March 7, playing three games in two days against the Bulldogs. Saturday, March 7's games will start at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., tentatively, and Sunday, March 8's match will begin at 1 p.m.
