Waters’ Near No-No Highlights Sunday Softball Action

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The No. 16 UIndy softball team (10-5) continued its stay in Central Florida Sunday, splitting a pair of in-region contests at the annual Spring Games in Winter Haven. The Greyhounds fell, 6-0, to Wayne State, and then turned the tables on Lake Eire with a 5-0 win.

The latter featured a one-hit shutout from junior pitcher Hallie Waters

GAME 1 | Wayne State 5, UIndy 0
Sunday marked the second day in a row that the UIndy offense struggled in the opening contest. The Hounds managed two hits in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but could not deliver the timely RBI.

Brooke Montgomery, Hanna Burris and Taylor Danielson each recorded two singles. Senior Lauren Honkomp (3-2) took the loss in an abbreviated start.

GAME 2 | UIndy 6, Lake Erie 0
Waters (6-2) toed the rubber versus the Storm and proceeded to whirl a gem of game. She retired the first 11 batters she faced and did not allow a hit until an infield single in the seventh inning. The Boonville, Ind., native struck out six and walked two.

Offensively, the Greyhounds hung three runs on the board in both the first and fourth frames. Burris was a big part of both rallies, as she went on to finish 3-for-4 with two runs and a ribbie. Danielson and Iannantone added two hits and a run apiece.

UP NEXT
The Hounds have an off day in Florida tomorrow but will be back at it Tuesday, starting with a meeting against Fairmont State University at 10:15 a.m. ET.
