MANHEIM, Pa.- The UIndy Wrestling program posted NCAA Division II's second-best team GPA for the 2019-20 season, while nine Greyhounds earned NWCA Scholar All-American status, announced by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Tuesday.
The Greyhounds posted a GPA Of 3.513 for their 10 Super Regional starters, good for second-best nationally. The GPA is also the best in program history. UIndy has finished in the top 10 nationally with their GPA in each of the last 12 seasons, and have finished in the top five in nine of those seasons.Â
"We take a lot of pride in the academic side of the sport," Head Coach Jason Warthan said. "Of course we'd like to win an academic national title every year, but to post the best ever GPA for our 10 starters and to be in contention for a national championship is all we can hope for. I think our culture is in a very good place right now, and I hope we can continue to build on it for the future."
In addition to the team finish, nine UIndy wrestlers were named Scholar All-Americans, led by
Brody Conner becoming the program's third four-time honoree. In addition to Conner,
Ana Abduljelil,
Kyle Barkovich,
Nick Brady,
Jack Eiteljorge,
Zach Fry,
Gleason Mappes,
Matt McKinney and
Chase Wilkerson all also received the nod. Barkovich and McKinney both earned their third honor, while Abduljelil, Brady, and Fry were all chosen for the second time in their careers. In order for a student-athlete to be nominated to the Division II Scholar All-American Team, he must have a minimum 3.4 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale, with that benchmark at 3.2 for those who qualified for the 2020 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships. The athlete must also have competed in a minimum of five dates of competition.
Maryville earned the team title for the third consecutive year, posting a record GPA of 3.695. After the Greyhounds in second, Colorado School of Mines (3.384), Colorado Mesa (3.343), and Augustana (3.336) rounded out the top five teams. The Saints also featured the most individuals honored with 16.Â
