Road Trip Ends With Setback at UMSL

ST. LOUIS – Playing its fourth road game seven days, the UIndy men's basketball team (0-7, 0-7 GLVC) wrapped up its season-long road swing with a 77-56 loss at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Saturday. Senior Dee Montgomery scored 10 points as one of three Greyhounds in double figures.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The road-weary Hounds ran saw the Tritons (5-2, 5-2) sprint out to a 15-4 lead. They went on to bury seven 3-pointers in the first half, including four triples from junior Kellen King alone. The lead got as high as 17 points before the break, but a step-back 3 from Montgomery on the Hounds' final possession cut it to a more-manageable 13 at the halfway point.

It was an up-hill battle from there, however, with UMSL's 16-6 surge in the first five minutes of the second half pushing the margin to 23.

The Hounds responded with a rare six-point possession to slice into the deficit, as a driving and-1 by Kendrick Tchoua, an UMSL flagrant foul, a pair of made free throws, and finally an offensive put-back by Cory Miller Jr. made it 52-35 with 14:54 left.

The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Tritons strung together a trio of unanswered 3s to pull away for good.

Miller Jr. and Jesse Bingham led the Greyhounds with 11 points apiece, with the latter adding seven rebounds.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-UIndy has attempted 23 3-pointers in each of the last three games, hitting just 22 percent (5) of them tonight.
-Tchoua was limited to a season-low 16 minutes of playing time due to foul trouble.
-Freshman Murray Becher hit a pair of 3-pointers on the way to season highs of six points and four rebounds.
-The Hounds' 56 points represented a season low and their 17 turnovers a season high.

HOUNDS BYTES
Head Coach Paul Corsaro on potential positives from the night …
"I thought in the second half we came out of the gate a little better than we started in the first half, but that's about it. I don't think we were mentally engaged as well as we should have been and we came out a little flat. But second half I thought we responded appropriately, but we dug ourselves too big of a hole in the first half and weren't able to recover."

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds finally return the friendly confines of Nicoson Hall. They will host the McKendree Bearcats on Thursday night, Jan. 14, marking the teams' second meeting in 11 days.
