INDIANAPOLIS – Taking the short trip downtown to the IU Natatorium, the University of Indianapolis swimming & diving teams each rattled off an impressive showing in the season opener against IUPUI Friday afternoon. On the women's side, UIndy claimed a 147-94 win while the men's squad corralled a 159-80 victory over the Jaguars.
In total, the Hounds successfully notched 20 event victories on the afternoon. The women's team collected eight individual and one relay win, while the men tallied nine individual and two relay top finishes.
It was a stellar day in the pool for
Marizel van Jaarsveld, who claimed victory in three individual races. In the 200 individual medley, she fired off a time of 2:04.88 which was good enough for a B standard. She went on to claim another B standard in the 100 breaststroke at 1:03.52. Finally, she was the top finisher in the 100 butterfly at a time of 56.34.
Johanna Buys also performed at a high level by claiming three top finishing marks on the afternoon, two of which were individual and one relay. In the 50 freestyle, she swam a time of 23.58 for a B standard while garnering top honors in the 100 freestyle at 51.87 for another B standard mark. Buys teamed up with
Kaitlyn McCoy,
Julia Simioni, and
Julia Magierowska in the 200 medley relay for a winning finish of 1:45.20.
Two individual top finishes came to
Brynhildur Traustadottir in the 200 freestyle (1:54.73) and the 500 freestyle (5:07.53) while
Emilia Colti-Dumitrescu was victorious in the 1,000 freestyle at 10:38.64.
In the diving,
Alexis Lumaj was the only Greyhound to place in the 3 meter and earned a comfortable second place with a finals score of 218.55. In the 1 meter, Lumaj,
Sarah Kerbrat, and
Emma Weisgerber went fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
Over on the men's side,
Joao Silva led the way by managing two individual and one relay victory. Silva was the top finisher in the 50 freestyle (20.71) while also touching the wall with a winning mark of 45.62 in the 100 freestyle. Silvia was joined by
Diego Mas,
Kyle Sinclair, and
Victor Antonon in the 200 freestyle relay for a winning time of 1:23.05.
In his first meet,
Cedric Buessing brought home two top finishes for the Hounds (200 individual medley at 1:53.81 and 500 freestyle at 4:38.85) while Sinclair added another relay victory to his total in the 200 medley relay at 1:29.83 with
Bartek Swiderski,
Brayden Cole, and
Aqeel Joseph.
Other individual top finishing marks came from
Stanislaw Chalat in the 1,000 freestyle (9:49.96),
Sebastian Wenk in the 200 freestyle (1:41.44),
Jeron Thompson in the 100 backstroke (50.56),
Jan Zuchowicz in the 100 breaststroke (56.14), and
Cade Hammond in the 1 meter diving (321.60).
In the diving, Hammond was a top finisher for UIndy in the 3 meter at third place while
Jason Lenzo and
Casey Crawford went fifth and sixth, respectively. Lenzo tallied a third place spot in the 1 meter while Crawford garnered sixth.
The Greyhounds will hop right back into action on Oct. 9-10 for the UIndy Invite hosted at Center Grove High School.
