EAST PEORIA, IL – The University of Indianapolis volleyball team saw its 2021 season come to an end on Friday, falling to nationally-ranked Lewis in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship tournament. The Hounds finish the season at 14-17 overall and 10-8 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set was back and forth as neither team recorded more than two points in a row. A kill from Alex Equihua evened the score at 20 before the Flyers went on a 5-1 run to sneak away with the 25-21 win. Hannah Huppenbauer tallied four kills in the first set while Equihua tallied eight assists.
UIndy trailed 23-14 in the second set until a 6-0 run pulled them within three. Equihua and Huppenbauer both tabbed kills in the run before two quick points from Lewis gave them the 25-20 victory.
The Flyers led 8-4 in the third frame before pulling away with an 8-1 run. The Hounds halted Lewis' momentum with back-to-back kills from Emma Jones and Kayla Guthrie. Guthrie went to on to tally a kill in four of five points for the Hounds. UIndy trailed 23-14 before Lauren Cullison, Huppenbauer and Jones combined for three straight kills. A Lewis attack error put the Hounds in striking distance at 23-18 before the Flyers scored a pair of points to take the final set 25-18.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Kayla Guthrie led the offense with 10 kills while Hannah Huppenbauer and Emma Jones tallied six.
- Alex Equihua dished out 31 assists to reach 1,164 on the season.
- MaKenna Barnhart paced the defense with 19 digs.
