INDIANAPOLIS -Â After a season cut short in 2020, the No. 6 UIndy women's lacrosse team enters the 2021 season confident that this will be the best year yet for the program. The Greyhounds did just that in their season opener against No. 22 Concordia-St. Paul, where they dominated the Golden Bears on a final score of 20-1.
Sarah Klein and
Grace Gunneson threw in six goals each in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Peyton Romig started her senior campaign on a tear, as she collected 12 of the Hounds' 19 draw controls. Romig's dominance (once again) led to a high volume of offense in the contest for UIndy, where they rattled off 10 straight unanswered goals for the first 23 minutes of the game. Gunneson would score five of her six goals in the first half alone, while Quinn Malcom,
Lauryn Hardoy and
Abigail Lagos would register a goal each as well in the first half for a 12-1 lead.
The Greyhounds would find eight more shots hit the back of the net in the second half, taking only 13 shots in comparison to their 23 attempts within the first period.
Christina Sato would take credit for one of the Hounds' eight goals in the second half with a free-position shot of her own -- one of her two points registered on the day. Sato's other point would come off of an assist, one of the team's six assists in the contest. Klein would lead the Greyhounds with two assists, while four other players notched one against the Golden Bears.
Lagos,
Delaney Stahrr and Carline Wood would lock down to Concordia-St. Paul offense, collecting two caused turnovers apiece in the contest.
Cassidy King would hold tight as the Hounds' wall in front of the goal, as the junior recorded a save on the Golden Bears' seven shots for her first win of 2021.Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Klein's career-high six goals came off a perfect six shots.
- Saturday's win marks the third straight season-opening victory for the program.
- Lagos' 14 shots tied a single-game school record, first set in April 2016 by
Sydney Hauffman against Walsh.
