GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The UIndy baseball team (1-2) wrapped up its season-opening series Sunday with a doubleheader split at Tusculum (2-1). Senior pitcher
Reid Werner tossed a gem in a 9-2 win in game one, while senior third baseman
Hunter Waning had four hits on the day to continue his hot start to the season.

GAME 1 | UIndy 9, TU 2
Werner (1-0) was straight dealing. The Greenwood, Ind., started his season with five scoreless innings before finishing with just five hits and two runs allowed in eight innings of work, striking out nine and walking only one. He gave up a solo shot in sixth and two-out RBI double in the eighth, both to second baseman Daulton Martin, before striking out the final batter he faced and eventually earning the win.
Freshman
Zach Rana pitched a pitched a perfect ninth in his season debut, striking out two.

Offensively the Hounds were nearly as effective; they jumped on the host Pioneers for two runs in the second and three in the third and didn't look back.
Alex Vela and
Brandon DeWitt each had a two-run single in the early going, while the Hounds later added three sacrifice flies.

DeWitt finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs while
Hunter Waning added two hits, two walks and two runs.

GAME 2 | TU 16, UIndy 7
Things started well in the series finale, as the Greyhounds raced out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Vela's successful squeeze bunt and Waning's two-run double highlighted a five-run second.

But Tusculum answered with an even bigger number in the bottom half of the second, plating nine runs to flip the momentum. The Pioneers coaxed eight walks while UIndy needed three different pitchers in the fatal frame.

Senior hurler
Myc Witty (0-1) was charged with loss after battling through 1 2/3 innings while fanning two. Leftfielder
Brian Keeney compiled two hits, two walks and a ribbie and
John Carpinelli added a double, a walk and a run.

UIndy is scheduled to host Northwood for a three-game series at Greyhound Park Feb. 27-28, playing conditions permitting.
