ST. LOUIS – It was a night of firsts for the UIndy men's tennis team but it was a similar story to their past matches this season. They traveled for the first time this season, making the near-250-mile journey to St. Louis to open GLVC play with a neutral-site matchup against the Southwest Baptist Bearcats. The Greyhounds entered with an undefeated record and added a digit to the win column before heading home, leaving River City with a 4-0 mark after knocking off the Bearcats (1-4) by a final score of 6-1.
It started with doubles which saw another Hounds sweep, continuing UIndy's undefeated streak in doubles play. Senior
Renato Lima made his spring debut in the No. 1 spot with teammate
Agustin Gascia, and it was a sweet return for Lima as they took care of business, winning 6-2.
Continuing through doubles, freshman
Pedro Franca and sophomore
Nikolaj Talimaa captured the next win and the doubles point in the pair's first time playing together in a match with a 6-3 victory. Concluding doubles was the reliable sophomore pair of
Tom Zeuch and
Jason Gerweck, which faced a close match but eventually came out on top, 7-6.
Singles action saw no matches take more than two sets, with the Hounds only suffering one loss on the night. Gascia wrapped up quickly at No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over the Bearcats Carlos Corser. Following that, Lima made his return to singles play but took a loss on the day in two sets to Adham Gaber 6-4, 7-5.
The match continued with Zeuch maintaining his perfect record this season with a straight sets win of 6-2, 7-6. And to secure the victory for the Hounds was freshman
Yoann Viel in the No. 5 singles spot, who came away with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph. Next, Talimaa had two identical sets carry him to another singles victory on the year, winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4.
And wrapping up the evening before a trip home, Gerweck took care of business with a tight 7-5 win before walking off the court with a 6-3 victory in the second set.
