Successful Road Trip Ends With GLVC Win vs. #14 SBU

ST. LOUIS – Wrapping up a busy weekend for UIndy Athletics, the fourth-ranked UIndy women's tennis made the trek to St. Louis Sunday to face off with the 14th0ranked Southwest Baptist Bearcats on neutral ground. The Greyhounds came out on top, 6-1, to remain unbeaten on the season.

Though they did lose their first doubles match of the year, the Hounds took the doubles point. Junior Nikol Alekseeva and her partner Anna Novikova took the first win of the night in the No. 1 doubles spot by a 6-4 final. Junior Maria Solnyshkina and sophomore Sofia Sharonova won handily, 6-2, and in the process secured the first team point of the Hounds. Senior Alina Kislitskaya and junior Anna Valiaeva fell 6-3, however, to wrap up doubles play 2-1 in favor of UIndy.

For singles it was a positive night as well, as Novikova wrapped up first with a 6-1, 6-4 win in the No. 2 spot to get it rolling. She was followed by No. 3 Kislitskaya, who won a first-set tiebreaker and eventually the match 7-6, 6-2.

Continuing through, Alekseeva faced her first serious challenge of the season in the No. 1 singles spot. After taking the first set 6-1, she was pushed to a tiebreaker for the first time this season but came away with a 7-5 win, securing the Hounds' fourth point of the evening and thus the match.

The Hounds would continue with a pair of wins by Solnyshkina and Valiaeva. Coming off a singles loss in the match-up with Division I Butler last week, Solnyshkina fought to the wire in a three-set thriller. The first set was all Solnyshkina as she commanded a 6-0 win. Her opponents, Constanca Crespo, fought back to tie the match 1-1 with a 7-5 second-set win. But Solnyshkina would live to see victory as she came away with a 10-7 super tiebreaker win in the third and final set to close out the matchup.

Conversely, Valiaeva captured a straight sets win 6-1, 7-5 in her season debut.

Sharonova would conclude the night with a loss at No. 4 but not without a fight. After managing a first-set tiebreaker in her favor, 7-6, the Bearcats' Elsa Pascual fought back with her own tiebreaker win, 7-6. Fittingly, the third set needed a super tiebreaker to decide the match, with Pascual winning 10-8.
