INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team hosted the Maryville Saints, with the two teams battling to make it into the GLVC Tournament. The Saints defeated the Hounds 59-58.
To start the second half, senior
Taylor Drury became the 24th player in a Crimson & Grey jersey to score 1,000 career points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Frustration painted
Mickey Sasson's face as she brought the ball up the court to start the second half as her team faced their largest deficient of the night at 14.
Suddenly after half time, a change on the Greyhounds court led by a burst of energy from the bench, they wouldn't go down easy. A made and-one layup by
Lauren With set the fire kicking them on a run with seven unanswered points. The Hounds looked hungry and began to play like a different team than had been on the court during the first half. Little by little, UIndy shrunk the gap between them and the Saints.
After a teeth-clenching two minutes, the third quarter ended. Maryville had managed to keep their lead, but not by much, ending the third quarter 48-44.
The energy from the third quarter carried for both teams into the fourth, bringing it down to the wire for the last two minutes. With the Hounds having a chance to take a win on their final possession but ended falling to the Saints. 58-59.
"We weren't ready to play today," said Head Coach Kristin Woodrich "We went down early and had to fight our way back,"
AMONG THE GREATS
Taylor Drury needed seven points to become the twenty-fourth player in Greyhound history to score 1,000 points. With 6:39 left in the third, after sinking a pair of free throws, she needed one. The milestone came 20 seconds later when Drury posted a layup officially putting her name in the record books.
She wasn't done, as the Pekin, Ind., native posted her first double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Drury totals 319 points on the season and 1011 on her career.
