Greyhounds Start Season With Saturday Split

OWENSBORO, KY. – The No. 17 UIndy softball team (1-1) opened the 2021 season at the Blue Ridge Battle in Owensboro, Ky., Saturday. The Greyhounds faced a pair of Midwest Region foes, blanking Trevecca Nazarene, 6-0, before falling to Northwood, 5-1.

GAME 1 | UIndy 6, TNU 0
Behind the strength of a combined shutout from the pitching staff, the season started with a solid all-around win versus a good Trevecca program. Pitchers Hallie Waters (1-0) and Kenzee Smith joined forces in a two-hitter, with Waters fanning three in five innings and Smith tossing two hitless frames in her collegiate debut.

The Hounds got on the board with two runs in the third. Senior Gianni Iannantone broke the seal with a bases-loaded single, scoring Sydnie Foster and Brooke Montgomery.

The next three came around on errors, while Kamrie Foster later collected a ribbie, plating Piper Belden in the seventh inning with a single up the middle.

GAME 2 | NU 5, UIndy 1
The Timberwolves powered past the Hounds with three home runs in the latter innings, with solo shots coming in the fourth and fifth and a two-run blast in the seventh. Meanwhile, UIndy's lone tally came in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Iannantone.

Haylie Foster (0-1) took the loss in the circle, giving up three runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Kamrie Foster had two more hits in game two to finish 4-for-7 on the day. Sophomore Emily O'Connor added a pair of singles and a hit by pitch in three plate appearances.
