Waters’ Near No-No Leads Hounds in Friday Sweep

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The No. 17 UIndy softball team (3-1) picked up a pair of region wins at Cedarville Friday, blanking the host Yellow Jackets in game one, 2-0, and earning a 6-3 win in extras in the capper. Senior Hallie Waters pitched a gem in the first game, tossing a one-hit shutout.

GAME 1 | UIndy 2, CU 0
The day started with a textbook pitchers' duel, as the teams combined for just three hits against Waters and Cedarville starter Casey Bertke.

But it was Waters who came out on top, fanning 11 in the complete-game shutout. The Boonville, Ind., product sat down the first seven batters before allowing her one and only walk, and didn't give up a hit until an infield single with two out in the bottom of the final frame.

Meanwhile, the Greyhound offense generated two tallies in the top of the second. A hit by pitch and a walk put two on ahead of a costly Cedarville error, scoring Gianni Iannantone and Lucy Garrett with the game's only runs.

Senior Hanna Burris recorded a pair of singles, acccounting for Hounds' only base hits.

GAME 2 | UIndy 6, CU 3 (8 innings)
UIndy fell behind 2-0 early and later 3-2 but scraped across the tying run in the sixth on a Sydnee Perry single to force extras.

In the top of the eighth, the Hounds loaded the bases for sophomore Emily O'Connor, who delivered the biggest hit of the early season with a gapper to clear the bases and ultimately seal the sweep.

Garnering her first collegiate start in the circle, freshman Kenzee Smith (1-0) went the distance, scattering six hits and four walks while striking out seven.

Senior shortstop Brooke Montgomery finished the game 3 for 5 with two runs, Iannantone had a two-run double in the third, while Garrett added two walks and a run.
