Burris Totals Five Hits as Hounds Sweep Yellow Jackets

INSTITUTE, W.V. – The No. 17 UIndy softball team (3-1) made it a perfect weekend with its second doubleheader sweep in as many days, besting host West Virginia State by scores of 7-0 and 6-5.

GAME 1 | UIndy 7, WVSU 0
Senior ace Hallie Waters engineered her second straight shutout to move to 3-0 on the year. She gave up just four hits while striking out six and walking zero. She has not allowed a single run in three starts this season (19 IP).

Offensively, the Hounds produced a season high in runs, kicked off by a three-run, inside-the-park homer from senior Hanna Burris in the fourth – her first career round-tripper. Haylie Foster notched an RBI triple in the same inning, providing more than enough cushion for Waters.

Foster had a game-high three hits, while Gianni Iannantone and Brooke Montgomery added two base hits apiece. In addition, freshman Dominique Proctor notched her first hit as a college student-athlete with a seventh-inning double.

GAME 2 | UIndy 6, WVSU 5
Burris was once again at the center of the Hounds' offensive effort in game two, racking up three more hits in a stellar day on the diamond. With the game knotted at 4-4 in the top of the seventh, Burris led off with a single through the right side and later came around with the game-winning on a clutch single from Iannantone.

Earlier, the Hounds managed a homer and a triple in the same inning for the second straight game. This time it was senior Taylor Danielson who cleared the left field fence with her first bomb of the year, while freshman Sydnee Perry immediately followed with her first collegiate triple.

Kamrie Foster chipped in two hits, including an RBI double, while Burris finished the day 5 for 8 with three runs, four RBIs and a stolen base.

The firsts kept coming as Audrey Sizemore (1-0) got her first career win in the circle, ending a Yellow Jacket rally in the fifth and ultimately giving up one run in two-plus innings. Waters later returned to get the final out and also the save, slamming the door on a base-loaded, two-out situation and hold on for the one-run win.
