OKLAHOMA CITY - The 10th-ranked UIndy men's tennis team capped its stay at the 2021 ITA National Division II Team Indoor Championship with a loss in the final to No. 1 ranked Columbus State Sunday. The Greyhounds fought their way to the finals with convincing wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals before dropping a 4-0 decision to the defending indoor champs.
Held at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center, the eight-team, three-day event featured some of the top teams in the nation.
It started with doubles which saw the Hounds battle for the point with sophomores
Jason Gerweck and
Tom Zeuch falling 6-3. Following them, the senior pair of
Renato Lima and
Agustin Gascia struck back with a win of their own 7-5. The final doubles match was down to the wire with the Cougars pair coming out on top 7-6 over sophomore
Nikolaj Talimaa and freshman
Pedro Franca to take the doubles point.
The Hounds then fought through singles play with Lima suffering the first loss 6-1, 6-2. He was followed by his doubles partner who fell in two close sets 6-4. 6-4. And conclude the match and the tournament for the Hounds was the No. 6 singles match, which saw Gerweck take two games off his Cougar opponent before being swept in the second set 6-0. Yoann Viel did not finish their matches.
