Men's Tennis Comes Up Short in Top-5 Showdown

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of Indianapolis men's tennis team suffered their second loss of the season, falling in a close match to host and fifth-ranked West Florida, 4-3, at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex Thursday afternoon. The Greyhounds (7-2) defeated these same Argonauts last month en route to a runner-up finish in the ITA DII Team Championships.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Argos started with a confident showing in doubles, securing the point 2-1. They took the first match over seniors Renato Lima and Agustin Gascia, 6-2, and followed with a win over sophomore Nikolaj Talimaa and freshman Pedro Franca, 6-3. However, the Argonauts would not sweep doubles play, as junior Tom Zeuch and freshman Yoann Viel pulled out a 6-4 win in the No. 2 slot.

Early victories would be the downfall of the Hounds in singles, as Lima fell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. He was followed by Gascia, who suffered the same fate with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to put the Hounds down three points.

Viel, who has emerged as a solid piece for the Hounds, fought to keep the Hounds in the match with a two-set win over his Argonaut opponent 6-2, 6-3. However the fight back would be short lived as Talimaa in the No. 4 singles spot would later fall 7-5, 6-1 to seal the win for the Argonauts.

The Hounds would then wrap up the day with two more singles wins, both in three sets. Zeuch took down his opponent 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. He would be followed by sophomore Dominik Koenig, who fought for his win with a 7-6 first-set win before dropping the next set 1-6. He then won the battle of attrition in the third set, picking up a 12-10 win to bring the match final to 4-3 in favor of the home Argonauts.

UP NEXT
A return to conference play is on the schedule next for the Hounds. They will travel to Romeoville, Ill to take on the Lewis Flyers on April 3.
