Hounds Extend Streak with Pair of Sunday Shutouts

LIBERTY, Mo. – The No. 7 UIndy softball team (25-2, 14-0 GLVC) kept its win streak alive Sunday, twice shutting out host William Jewell (8-20, 7-9). The Greyhounds remained unbeaten in conference play and have now won 18 games in a row overall.

Sophomore catcher Lexy Rees finished the day 3-for-6 with four RBIs to lead the Hounds at the plate, while each half of the pitching tandem of Hallie Waters and Kenzee Smith recorded a two-hit, complete-game shutout.

GAME 1 | UIndy 5, WJC 0
UIndy jumped on the Cardinals in the top of the first, as Rees' two-out, two-run double staked the visitors to an early lead.

They piled on with three more in both the fourth and the fifth to invoke the run rule. Senior Brooke Montgomery delivered a three-run bomb in the fourth inning – her second homer of the week, while Sydnie Foster's two-run single in the fifth capped the scoring.

Waters (13-1) was once another nearly untouchable, fanning seven in her five innings of work while allowing a pair of harmless singles.

GAME 2 | UIndy 3, WJC 0
The Greyhounds again plated two runs in the first, with Rees again recording a two-out RBI. Her single up the middle got the Hounds on the board and was quickly followed by a Cardinal fielding error – one of four on the day – to allow another run cross.

Rees struck one more time in the third with a sacrifice fly, scoring Kamrie Foster with the game's third and final run.

It was more than enough for Smith. The freshman phenom shrugged off two hits and three walks to secure her sixth shutout of the season.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds will remain on the road tomorrow to play Saturday's rescheduled doubleheader at Truman. First pitch from Kirksville, Mo., is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
