Hounds Sweep Saints, Notch Conference Win #5

ST. LOUIS - After a successful senior day endeavor, the Hounds set out on the road, first to St. Louis to take on the Maryville Saints (4-5). Behind close matches in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles slots, the Hounds emerged victorious, moving to 5-0 in conference play with two more matches left in the regular season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior Renato Lima alongside junior Maximilian Witthaus set the pace in the No. 2 doubles spot with a confident 6-0 win. Following the sweep, the No. 1 and No. 3 spots would both end in 6-4 wins for the Hounds; sophomore Tom Zeuch with freshman Yoann Viel finished first, followed by freshman Pedro Franca and junior Jason Gerweck.

Singles proceeded to almost finish bottom to top with Franca in the No. 6 spot securing another win in straight sets, not dropping a single game 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Nikolaj Talimaa after not playing doubles, came in fresh and it showed with a dominating performance in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Gerweck maintained that style with a straight sets win 6-4, 6-2. And to round out the bottom four matches, Lima once again scored a straight set win for the Hounds, 6-3, 6-2.

In the top two matches is where the tennis would get interesting, with both Viel and Zeuch getting pushed to tie breaking third sets, the first of which would be Viel in the No. 2 spot. He would drop set one, 6-2, but would not fall so easily, as the freshman would win 7-5 in the second set. The endurance of the young Viel would come to be the difference maker as he would win the super tiebreaker, 10-7.

Zeuch almost had a very similar match to Viel dropping, his first as well 6-4. However, he commanded the second set, winning 6-2. But once the pair would enter a third-set super tiebreaker, it would be all she wrote, as Zeuch would walk away with the "W" 10-5.

UP NEXT
The Hounds will stay in Missouri for their next match, as they line up across from the Lindenwood Lions on Saturday, April 17.
