Ward Sends Men’s Soccer to GLVC Semifinal

INDIANAPOLIS - After earning the No. 1 seed in the 2021 Men's Soccer GLVC Tournament, the No. 4-ranked UIndy men's soccer team (12-0-3, 11-0-3 GLVC) took on Illinois Springfield (4-4-3, 4-3-3) in one of the four quarterfinal games on Monday night. After the Prairie Stars tied UIndy to halt the Hounds' streak a month ago, the Greyhounds came out on top in the second half of Monday's contest, moving onto the GLVC Semifinal on Friday with their 1-0 victory.

INS & OUTS
Both teams came out aggressive early, but Illinois Springfield struck first by taking a chance at the goal within the games' first 10 minutes of action. Dimitrios Karousos was ready for the take, the senior goalkeeper saving the ball and preventing it from reaching the back of the night on the high side. It would only be one of the two shots they'd take in the entire half, the Hounds' defense pressuring to give the offense five shots of their own. Alejandro Steinwascher kept the Prairie Stars' goalkeeper on their feet, the junior looking at an opportunity at the top half of the goal, but ended up being knocked away at the last second for a save.

The first half may have ended with a 0-0 score, but the Greyhounds' energy was resurged in the start of the second half of the contest. At the 46' minute mark, Seth Ward nailed a chip shot in the lower left side of the goal, his second game-winner of the season. Jeremy Fechtman was the teammate who found Ward for the clean look, Fechtman picking up his third assist so far in the season on that play. Illinois Springfield came out on aggression from then-on, the team doubling their shots taken in the second half for five total in the back half of the contest alone. Only one of those five shots would be on-goal, Karousos taking away the Prairie Stars' final scoring chance by knocking the ball away at the 85' mark.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- UIndy's quarterfinal contest is the fifth game this season the team scored their first goal in the second half.

- The Hounds' win bests their 2019 GLVC Tournament results, losing the semifinal match 3-2.
