EVANSILLE, Ind. - An ITA DII Team Indoor Championship, a unanimous No. 1 ranking in the country, the No. 1 singles player and No. 1 doubles team; all are a part of an historic 2020-21 season for the UIndy women's tennis team. But after a win today at the University of Southern Indiana, the Greyhounds can add an undefeated regular season to that resume and taking a 16-0 record into the postseason. The Hounds beat USI today, 6-1, to secure the accomplishment.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles for the No. 1 team in the nation continued to be a strong suit, as they won all three matches. Seniors Alina Kislitskaya and Kristina Lagoda, finished their match first winning 6-1. Junior Maria Solnyshkina and sophomore Sofia Sharonova then swept their Screaming Eagles rivals in convincing fashion, 6-0. And finally the No 1-ranked doubles pairing in the country, juniors Nikol Alekseeva and Anna Novikova, won 6-3.
Despite being a woman down, the Hounds continued to rack up points in singles, winning all games played in straight sets. Kislitskaya in the No. 3 spot wrapped up quickly 6-1, 6-0. Alekseeva, the No. 1 singles player in the country, showed no signs of rust winning after sitting out last week against Lindenwood, winning 6-3, 6-1. Her doubles partner Novikova followed up next 6-3, 6-4.
Sharonova and junior Anna Valiaeva in the No. 4 and No. 5 singles spots would combine to earn three 6-0 wins. Sharonova won 6-0, 6-2 and Vailaeva won in two 6-0 sets. The Hounds would forfeit the No. 6 singles match to walk away with the 6-1 victory.
