INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy football team capped a unique season with a conference title Saturday night, winning the first-ever GLVC Football Championship Game against rival Truman State University, 46-29. The night featured a number of memorable individual performances, including a 200-yard rushing performance and the toppling of a two-decade-old program record.
Â
Junior running back
Toriano Clinton entered rarified air Saturday. The Chicago native racked up 235 rushing yards and three touchdowns, etching his name beside the third-highest single-game rushing total by a Greyhound on record*.
Â
Meanwhile, senior
Daveon Bell became the school's all-time leader in career punt return yards, surpassing former Greyhounds-standout Craig Cothron and his total of 919 yards, set back in 1998.
INS & OUTS
Truman scored first and held the lead until the very end of the first half. An 11-yard TD pass from
Bryce Stancombe to
Ryan Topper with eight seconds on the clock put the Hounds up 24-21, springboarding them on to what proved to a game-changing stretch. While the UIndy defense held the 'Dogs at bay, the Greyhounds offense ran off 25-unanswered points spanning halftime and into the fourth quarter, sending their guests reeling.
Â
Stancombe once again proved both efficient and effective, finishing 26-for-36 passing for 292 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Bloomington, Ind., native finished the shortened season with a stellar .753 completion percentage with 10 TDs and zero picks.
Â
When he wasn't throwing the ball, he was handing off to Clinton, who garnered 31 rushing attempts – most by a Hound since 2013. Topper added a team-high 114 receiving yards, while Bell amassed a combined 229 all-purpose yards.
Â
Defensively, freshman safety
Michael Brown topped the Hounds with nine tackles,
Cory Klem had two tackles for a loss and a pass break-up, while
Alec Patch was credited with 1 ½ sacks and forced a safety late in the game.
Â
Paul Buisman was 3 for 3 on field goal attempts with a long of 31 yards.
