ST. CHARLES, Mo. - 110 minutes of action and more took place out at Lindenwood University on Sunday, the first-seeded UIndy men's soccer team (13-0-4, 11-0-3 GLVC) took on the second-seeded Maryvile University (11-4-2, 10-4-1) in the 2020-21 GLVC Men's Soccer Championship. After two overtime sessions, the Saints took down the Hounds in a series of penalty kicks, Maryville hoisting the league title by a session of 5-3.
INS & OUTS
The Saints came out hungry for a score, putting the Greyhounds on the defense in the first half from the pressure. Despite the two programs each taking nine shots during the first half of action, Maryville was able to generate seven corner kicks into the Hounds' box. Dimitrios Karousos and the rest of the squads were able to prevent any chance the Saints threw down, the senior goalkeeper collected a pair of saves to prevent any leads. Alejandro Steinwascher and Dylan Bollard each got an opportunity to put UIndy up in the first half, but the Saints' goalkeeper was able to deflect their shots to keep the game even throughout the first 45 minutes.
It didn't take long for the crowd to see action in the second half of the contest, both team knocking a shot in the back of the net in the timespan. Maryville struck first in the game, dropping a shot behind Karousos just before the 50' mark expired, putting the pressure on the Greyhounds to respond in order to survive. UIndy would do just that less than four minutes later, scoring on one of the team's three corner kicks in the second half. Senior Jeremy Fechtman laid a corner kick to the far side of the goal, Kendall Allen jumping up to reach for a header into the mass of players on the opposite side of the net. Sophomore Cole Rainwater slid into the mix, laid a shot perfectly in the top left corner past the keeper, earning his seventh goal of the season to tie the game once again.
Overtime would put the Hounds on the edge of their seat, slamming in four shots on goal in the 20 minutes of action in the two sessions. The Saints' goalie was on top of their game in the overtime, not letting a single attempt slide past him with four saves in extra time. The Greyhounds' defense stood just as strong as they ever have the entire year in overtime, not allowing a single shot on goal to send the game to penalty kicks. Sunday's championship would mark the sixth time since 2002 that UIndy would send a GLVC Tournament game to PKs, unfortunately pulling up short this time around.
