Greyhounds Outlast UIS, Move to GLVC Final

ROMEOVILLE, Ill - The No. 5 UIndy men's tennis team earned a shot at a fifth straight GLVC Championship Saturday, sweeping East Division third-seed University of Illinois Springfield. The 4-0 win brings the Hounds to 16-2 on the season and sends them to the finals tomorrow.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Prarie Stars would compete with the Hounds well in doubles, taking one match off of the No. 1 seed, but still would lose the point. The Greyhounds would start on their heels with Nikolaj Talimaa and Pedro Franca dropping their match, 6-3. The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles pairings would hold strong, however, against a lively UIS squad. Freshman of the Year Tom Zeuch and Yoann Viel fought to win 6-4. And to break the 1-1 tie, the playoff experience of Renato Lima and Maximilan Witthaus prevailed with a 6-4 win.

Singles would kick off fast for the Hounds, as both Zeuch and Jason Gerweck meant business, finishing off their UIS opponents in straight sets. Zeuch finished first, winning 6-2, 6-3 followed by Gerweck's efficient 6-1, 6-1 victory.

To end the afternoon it would be an grueling match between Lima and Tomas Martinez in the No. 1 singles spot. Lima would start strong with a commanding 6-0 first-set win. Martinez did not fall that easily in the second match, taking it 6-4. Finally, Lima's endurance would succeed as he won the third and final set 6-3. Viel, Talimaa and Dominik Koenig did not finish their matches.

UP NEXT
It is a rematch for the Hounds in the finals of the GLVC Championship Tournament as, like the women's team, they face off with the No. 22 Southwest Baptist Bearcats once again. The two teams met back on Feb. 21, which saw a 6-1 Hounds victory, one they hope to repeat tomorrow at Lewis University at 1 p.m ET.
