INDIANAPOLIS – The fifth-ranked UIndy softball team (35-5, 24-2 GLVC) salvaged a split Saturday in a doubleheader versus the visiting Maryville Saints (18-13, 16-10). After falling 5-3 in the opener, the Greyhounds employed three home runs and a solid pitching performance to take game two, 4-2.
Â
GAME 1 | MU 5, UIndy 3
The Greyhounds jumped in front early with a three-run blast from
Gianni Iannantone in the bottom of the first. The Saints responded in the next half inning, however, hanging a four-spot on the board to chase senior ace
Hallie Waters.
Â
Down two runs in their final at bat, the Hounds threatened with a leadoff double by
Brooke Montgomery followed by a single by
Kamrie Foster. But both runners would be stranded, as the Saints handed the Hounds their first home loss of the year.
Â
Waters (17-3) was tagged with the L – just her third of the year – after lasting 1 1/3 innings in an uncharacteristic outing.
Haylie Foster came on in relief and ultimately finished the game, allowing one run in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Â
GAME 2 | UIndy 4, MU 2
Facing one of the top pitchers in the GLVC in senior Alyssa Callans, the Hounds once again utilized the long ball early, with both Iannantone and
Sydnee Perry going yard in the first two frames.
Â
H. Foster got in on the act as well, adding a solo shot in the fourth inning to up her career-high total to six on the season.
Â
In the circle, freshman-phenom
Kenzee Smith (17-1) shook off a shaky first inning to get the win. The Decatur Central grad did not allow a run after a two-run homer in the first, fanning seven in the complete-game effort.
