Hawks Slip Past Hounds at Conference Tournament

EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The top-seeded UIndy softball team (38-6) endured its first loss at the double-elimination GLVC Championship Tournament Friday, falling to No. 5-seed Rockhurst, 3-2. The Hawks came through with a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to earn the win. The Greyhounds will return to the field later this evening to face the McKendree/Drury winner in an elimination game at approximately 6 p.m. ET.

The four-day, double-elimination bracket is being played out at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria, Ill., Thursday through Sunday.

INS & OUTS
In a contest featuring two All-GLVC First Team pitchers, the game remained scoreless until the Hounds broke the stalemate with a pair of tallies in the top of the fifth. Brooke Montgomery and Kamrie Foster each delivered RBI singles in the frame – both with two outs – to stake the Hounds to a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks (26-14) would answer in the sixth with their own two-out rally. After a couple of fly balls started the inning, Rockhurst applied pressure with a single and a walk, setting the stage for Josie Lindemann. The all-conference utility player connected on a 1-0 offering, sending it over the center field fence in what proved to be the game winner.

Senior slugger Taylor Danielson nearly tied it in the top of the seventh, but her deep fly ball was caught at the warning track.

One day after tossing a perfect game, Rockhurst senior Lexie Storrer (21-4) got the pitching win, striking out 13 Greyhounds in the process. Meanwhile, freshman Kenzee Smith (19-2) took the loss – just her second of the year.

INSIDE THE BOX
- Montgomery was the only Greyound with two hits, adding a third-inning double to her aforementioned RBI single.
- Emily O'Connor managed a single in the fourth inning.
- K. Foster added a stolen base in the fifth.
