INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men's basketball team trailed by seven with less than nine minutes on the board but were able to complete the comeback on Tuesday night, beating McKendree University 63-56 in their return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Cory Miller Jr. scored 23 points for the second time in three games to help the Hounds improve to 3-1 in GLVC action.
A tough UIndy defense held the Bearcats to zero offensive rebounds on the night (yes, zero), matching an NCAA zero. Dating back to the 1990-2000 season, that has not happened in a UIndy game before. On March 3, 2013 they held Missouri-St. Louis to one, but had not held an opponent to zero until tonight.
HOW IT HAPPENED
McKendree led 51-44 with 8:46 remaining before a lay up from Jakobie Robinson froze the Bearcats momentum. Jesse Bingham went a perfect four-for-four at the charity strip to cut the deficit to one. The Bearcats responded with a three-point play of their own to regain a four point lead but their energy was short lived as Bingham nailed a corner three to make it a one-point game once again.
After a missed lay up, Josiah Tynes grabbed an offensive rebound and scored the second chance basket to put UIndy on top by one. The Bearcats missed their opportunity to steal the lead back before Miller Jr. notched a driving lay up.
With 90 seconds remaining and three-point lead, Bingham stole the ball and found Tynes for a quick three to put the game away. UIndy closed out the game with a 13-2 run for their fifth consecutive win and first of the new year.
