Dominant Second Half Pushes Hounds Past Miners

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men's basketball team continued their win streak on Thursday night with a hard fought road win at Missouri S&T.  The 78-61 conference win marks the sixth straight victory for the Hounds who improve to 10-3 on the season and 4-1 in GLVC action.  UIndy is the first team in the GLVC East Division to reach four conference wins on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A back-and-forth first half saw six lead changes as neither team led by more than five.  The Miners led for over 14 minutes of action before back-to-back three's from Josiah Tynes and Jesse Bingham tied the game at 30.  A floating jumper from Cory Miller Jr. in the final minute gave the Hounds a 36-35 lead at the break.

Missouri S&T notched the first basket of the second frame to regain a one-point lead but it was short lived as Bingham responded with a driving lay up.  The Hounds led from then on as they dominated the second half, outscoring the Miners 42-26.

UIndy ran away late with a 13-0 run with under five minutes remaining.  While holding Missouri S&T scoreless for nearly four minutes of play, the Hounds shot a perfect five-of-five including a corner three from Aaron Etherington.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach Paul Corsaro on the teams second half performance
"I told the guys at halftime we need to start swinging for singles, not home runs.  If we swing for singles then over time we'll start getting runs, and sure enough we did.  We got higher percentage looks and we knocked them down."

Corsaro on Tynes' career-high scoring
"Josiah is a guy that since he's arrived here, he's gotten better every single day.  What you see on the court and the energy he brings, it's not just during game time. That's who he is every day during practice, every day in film he's the most vocal, every day in the weight room and he's a testament to what happens if you work hard."

Corsaro on the importance of rebounding
"That's our number one game key every game.  We know that stat.  After last year we identified where we can get better in the offseason.  The two stats that I saw that we struggled with was the boards and turnovers.  This past summer, we had everybody here working hard in the weight room and we had a goal weight for everybody to hit.  A testament to our strength coach Steve Barrick, there's no better strength coach out there.  Our guys' efforts in the weight room is what you're seeing on the boards.  It's nice to see their efforts from off the court over the summer, come to fruition now."

UP NEXT
Following the cancelation on Saturday's home game versus Lindenwood, the Hounds won't return to action until a week from Thursday when they travel to Lebanon, IL to take on McKendree.  The Hounds beat the Bearcats 63-56 at home earlier this week.  UIndy returns home next Saturday, Jan. 15 to host Southern Indiana who the Hounds beat on the road to open GLVC play earlier this season.
