Swimming & Diving Open Season Versus DI Bearcats

INDIANAPOLIS—The UIndy swimming & diving teams opened their 2022-23 season by hosting the University of Cincinnati Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds earned a split versus the Division I Bearcats, with the men taking their dual, 161.5-138.5, and the women falling by the score of 158-136. UIndy and Cincy have now faced off in an early-season dual in each of the last six seasons.

Graduate student and 13-time All-American Kaitlyn McCoy had a successful meet, leading all Hounds with three individuals wins. The Phoenix native touched the wall first in both the 100 and 20 backstrokes as well as the 200 IM, scoring 27 points in the process.

Johanna Buys (50 free) and Emilia Colti-Dumitrescu (1000 free) also earned event wins for the UIndy women.

The UIndy men matched the women's total of five individual wins. Cedric Buessing cruised to a victory in the 1000 free. Later he finished second only to teammate Christian Hedeen in the 500 free.

On the other end of the spectrum in the sprints, Diego Mas, Joao Silva and Aqeel Joseph went 1-2-3 in the 50 free. Jeron Thompson took first in the 100 back and Serge Ahadzhanian won the 100 fly.

Meanwhile, the Hounds swept the four relays races as both the men and women won the 200 medley and 200 free relays. Buys, Julia Magierowska, and Leticia Vaselli contributed to both of the women's win, with Anahi Schreuders joining them on the 200 MR and Andrea Paaske on the 200 FR.

Thompson and Mas helped the Hounds on both of the men's relay wins. Silva and freshman Nick Quintero lent their talents to the 200 FR, while Sebestyen Bohm and Kael Yorke handled the breaststroke and butterfly legs, respectively, in the 200 MR.

On the boards, the Hounds won three of the four events. Alexis Lumaj (237.15) won the women's 3-meter diving, while Julio Osuna (315.75, 1-meter) and Cade Hammond (312.68, 3-meter) split the men's wins.

The Greyhounds take on another DI program next weekend when they make the short trek downtown to the IU Natatorium to take on the IUPUI Jaguars.
