Women's Basketball Falls In Season Opener to Malone

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team fell in its 2022-23 season opener by a final of 88-82 on Friday night at Nicoson Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A slow start for UIndy saw head coach Marc Mitchell call an early timeout after quicky trailing 6-0. Despite this, the Greyhounds battled back and fought the Pioneers to a 19-19 tie heading into the second quarter. Both teams were solid on offense in the opening frame with Malone shooting 52.9 percent from the field (9-17) while the Hounds managed a 50 percent shooting mark (7-14).

The second quarter opened as a back and forth battle with the scored tied for a large stretch of play. However, Malone broke through around five minutes remaining with a 9-3 scoring run which eventually helped roll over into a 41-34 lead for the Pioneers at the half. Sadie Hill led the Greyhounds in scoring through the first half with nine points while Liv Becker was right behind with six points of her own.

The third quarter opened with Ilani Williams-Harris cutting the Hounds halftime deficit down to just one point after she drilled back-to-back 3-pointers only a few minutes in to get the crowd at Nicoson Hall roaring. Despite this, Malone quickly weathered the storm by rolling out a 7-0 scoring run a short time later. This run played a key role in helping the Pioneers lead the whole remainder of the quarter.

Trailing by just two points heading into the final quarter, UIndy held strong and slowed the Pioneers enough to finally tie the game back up after freshman Kacilyn Krebs knocked down a 3-pointer with a little over seven minutes remaining. However, MU once again used this as fuel and rattled off a crushing 10-0 scoring run. Despite a final push by the Hounds, Malone held on for the 88-82 victory.
