QUINCY, Ill. – The No. 20 UIndy men's basketball team (4-1, 0-1) dropped its first game of the season on Saturday, as the host Quincy Hawks (3-3, 1-0 GLVC) stifled a late visitor run to win, 62-57.
Â
Jesse Bingham and
Josiah Tynes each finished with 15 points, while
Kendrick Tchoua record eight points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Following a quick eight-point outburst with
Jakobie Robinson joining Bingham with a triple in the opening two minutes, the Hawks slowly cut away into the early Greyhound lead. A 9-0 run from Quincy made it 27-22 with under four minutes left in the first half before
Bruno Williams drilled his lone 3-pointer of the afternoon.
Â
Tynes knotted the game at 30 apiece just before the break, but – as Quincy did throughout  the entire contest – Solomon Gustafson answered with a driving layup to give the hosts a two-point advantage heading into the locker room.
Â
Once Tynes sunk a triple after the first media timeout of the second half, the Hawks gained control for good. The teams traded runs down the stretch, as Quincy built a 58-47 run with under seven minutes left. Robinson netted two from the charity stripe to inch the Greyhounds to a three-point deficit, however, the Hawks continued to make stops in the final three minutes to seal the win.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Tynes' 15 points marks a season-high for the third-year Greyhound and just one shy off a career-best performance from last winter.
- Quincy fought its way to the free throw line at a higher pace, outshooting UIndy 17 to seven from the charity stripe.
- Nearly half of the Greyhounds' field goal attempts came from beyond the arc, launching 30 of the team's 62 shots from 3-point land.
- The Hawks led the scoring from inside the paint, 26-20, with UIndy's
David Ejah and Tchoua combining for 14.
