ALBERTVILLE, Ala.—The No. 12-ranked UIndy softball team wrapped up the annual UAH Charger Chillout with a doubleheader split, downing Shorter University, 14-2, before dropping a 10-7 final against West Alabama.
Â
The Hounds finished the weekend with a .457 team batting average and put up 10 runs per game.
Â
GAME 1 | UIndy 14, Shorter 2
UIndy hung two runs on the board in the top of the first as an RBI triple from
Emily O'Connor and a
Gianni Iannantone sac fly got things rolling. But the Hawks tied it with single runs in the third and fourth.            Â
Â
UIndy delivered the knockout blow with a six-run fifth inning, however. O'Connor and Iannantone were once again in the middle of it, as both sluggers delivered RBI doubles.
Â
The flood gates opened again in the seventh, as six more runs came across to ice it.
Sydnee Perry,
Maddy Stout and
Megan Nichols powered the action with RBI doubles of their own.
Â
Haylie Foster (2-0) garnered her second pitching win in as many games, tossing six innings while allowing just four hits and two runs. Freshman hurler
Jayden Casebolt closed it out with a scoreless seventh.
Â
UIndy finished the game with six extra-base hits and three stolen bases.
Â
GAME 2 | UWA 10, UIndy 7
The Hounds got out of the gates quickly with three runs in the first and four more in the second. First-inning doubles from O'Connor and Iannantone were followed by
Lexy Rees' two-run blast in the second, good for the season's first home run.
Â
UWA countered with a three runs in the third to seize the momentum and went on the plate the game's final 10 tallies. The five-run fifth proved the difference, chasing UIndy-ace
Kenzee Smith (1-1) and tagging her with the loss.
Â
UP NEXT
The Hounds will travel south again next weekend for the Music City Invitational. Four in-region opponents await them, starting with Ferris State on Friday, Feb. 18.
