Hounds Open Blue Bridge Battle with Two Dubs

OWENSBORO, Ky.— The UIndy softball team upped its win streak to six with a pair of five-inning wins at the Blue Bridge Battle Saturday, hosted by Kentucky Wesleyan College. The seventh-ranked Greyhounds run-ruled Ohio Dominican, 9-0, and Wheeling, 13-2, to move to 9-1 on the season.

Wheeling's two tallies late in game two snapped a string of five consecutive shutouts for the Hounds.

GAME 1 | UIndy 9, ODU 0 (5 innings)
Continuing a recent trend, the Hounds put up a crooked number early, plating four runs in the top of the first. Catcher Lexy Rees did most of the damage, blasting a three-run bomb to left center.

Freshman Megan Nichols got in the fun with a two-run single in the second inning, while Emily O'Connor and Gianni Iannontone later added RBI knocks of their own.

Each of the first four hitters for UIndy recorded two hits, including leadoff Maddy Stout. She is now 8 for 12 on the season with a team-high 1.087 slugging percentage.

Meanwhile, sophomore ace Kenzee Smith was true to form, tossing her second shutout in as many starts. She allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out six.

GAME 2 | UIndy 13, Wheeling 2 (5 innings)
Once again UIndy sprinted out of the gate and didn't look back, hanging multiple runs on the board in every half inning. Back-to-back doubles from Rees and Sydnee Perry in the bottom of the first proved to be the biggest blows, while Nichols added a game-high three hits and two RBIs. Tara Williams had a pinch-hit RBI single in the third.

Haylie Foster got the win in the circle, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing just two hits.
