INDIANAPOLIS- The Greyhounds closed out the 2022 regular season with their own Greyhound Open Sunday. Five current UIndy wrestlers placed at the event.
UIndy's showing was led by unattached
Sam Morrill winning the 184 bracket. The freshman, wrestling unattached, went 5-0 en route to the title, including two pins to open his tournament. Morrill won the bracket title with a 2-1 decision over Purdue's Macartney Parkinson.
Both
Aidan Petersen (197) and
Dennis Hubbard (285) took fourth in their respective weight classes. Petersen went 4-2 on the day, including recording a par of pins. Hubbard went 5-1 through the heavyweight bracket, pinning his first two opponents. Â
Brayden Lowery took fifth at 149, going 5-1 with three falls, while
Nick Varanelli took sixth at 133 with a record of 2-2 for the event.Â
In addition to the Greyhound student-athletes competing, UIndy also had a pair of assistant coaches take bracket titles, and two alums place in the event. Ivan Lopounchanski, current UIndy assistant, took the 149 title, while Greyhound graduate assistant Nick Foster took the championship at 174. Alums
Dylan Faulkenberg and DJ Smith also competed, with Faulkenberg taking the 285 championship and Smith finishing sixth at 125.Â
UIndy heads to the postseason next weekend, with the Greyhounds heading to the 2022 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships as the event's two-seed. The Hounds will take on William Jewell in first round action from the tournament at Lindenwood Saturday.
