Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – It was hot and humid in the UIndy Tennis Center Saturday as the Wayne State Warriors traveled from Detroit to challenge the No. 8 UIndy men's tennis squad. Despite the heat, the Greyhounds battled and eventually defeated the Warriors, 4-3, off the back of a match clinching third set victory by
Jason Gerweck.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles finished 1-2-3 in match order, with the Hounds pairing of
Tom Zeuch and
Zac Faveri setting the pace for the evening in a 6-4 win. The Warriors battled back however, taking down
Yoann Viel and
Edgar Destouet 6-2.
To capture the doubles point it was
Nikolaj Talimaa and Gerweck, in an extremely close and back-and-forth match. With both teams cheering on their side, the Greyhound's pair held on to win the match, 7-6, and the doubles point as the entire men's team swarmed the court.
The action didn't calm down from there as singles saw several close matches. The Warriors earned a point right back after doubles with a win over Zeuch 6-4, 6-3. Talimaa in the No. 2 singles slot took the lead right back to the Hounds however, with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win.
Viel went on to battle in his match after losing the first set, 6-2. He rifled back and 6-2 set win of his own before losing set three 6-4 to make it 2-2 overall. Wayne State didn't let the tie stand for long as they took down Faveri in No. 5 singles 7-5, 6-2.
The Hounds, needing to sweep the final two matches, looked to Destouet. After falling in a quick set one 6-1, he battled back and forced a tiebreak in set two which he won 7-6. That momentum swing stayed with the freshman as he won set three 6-3.
The final match and the overall victory was in the hands of Gerweck. He opened up with a 6-4 first-set loss to put him on his heels. But Gerweck did not falter in the slightest, taking a convincing 6-4 second-set win. With both teams cheering on just as they did in doubles, Gerweck iced the match with a final 6-3 set win.
